Thoughtful hate.
It’s amazing what worlds our minds can create out of such simple things. We can take something as trivial as someone bumping into us on a sidewalk and create an entire back story for that person and turn an accidental bump into a masochistic act of hatred. Everything we feel and all of our emotions are dependent upon our minds. Our past, our childhood, our good and bad experiences all build up throughout the course of our lives and determine how we will respond and react to what we encounter. But what makes this bad is when we justify our actions through these thoughts. We contort life’s beauty and turn it into evil, while being justified by the fact that it is beautiful. Our minds create a bubble, a haven, where we think we can do no wrong.
This is life. This is human nature. This is what we are and there is no way to avoid that. However, letting our thoughts control us is where love turns into stalking, where spite turns into murder, where patriotism turns into world wars. These are the points where the mind goes too far. We end up becoming enveloped by our thoughts and letting them control us without concern for right or wrong, and the reason we don’t have concern for right or wrong at this point is because we have already fully justified our actions. Each person is right by his/her own thoughts.
To understand all of what I just said, let’s look at an example. Let’s say that you love your church very much. You love what it stands for, you love the people there and you love the feeling you get when you are there. That is a very good depiction of love. In your mind, you love it so much that you think everyone should love it just the same. For this reason, you chose to defend this love. At his point your love transforms into something almost contradictory. It stops being love and becomes a defensive tool. Because of this, your love secretly transforms into hate. You hate everyone that doesn’t share what you love. You use your “love” to degrade them, to make them miserable, even to go so far as to go to war against them. And all of this time, your mind is telling you that you are right, because all of this stemmed out of love, although it no longer has any of the original love’s characteristics.
This example filters into the love for anything: the love for a pet, the love for a person, the love for a country, etc. That line between love and too much love is very thin, because our motives remain the same although our intent has reversed. People can follow that path their entire lives and always feel that ultimately they had done right. This is what makes it so dangerous. We are comforted by our own thoughts and so we confide in them. We stay in the warm cozy house they have created and only look through it’s windows. We never step outside of that house to see how the rest of the world sees it. We figure that as long as we are justified, as long as our motives are pure, then we are right and our actions cannot be wrong. Far be it for our thoughts to lead us astray.
This was the crime of Dr. Kevorkian. This was the crime of Hitler. This is everyone’s crime. Make sure your thoughts are pure. The only way to do that is to step outside of them. Step outside of your “comfort zone”. Question your actions instead of following them blindly. Question why you believe what you believe. Don’t question to raise doubts, question so that you do not follow blindly. Know who you are, not just through your eyes, but through everyone else’s eyes. This is a lot more difficult for me to do than to say.
